GENERAL: The Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry in the United Kingdom was set up in 1959, initially as the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in London and changing to its present name in 1974. It is a registered private company limited by guarantee, funded by its members' annual subscriptions. Its purpose is to promote and extend economic relations and trade between Japan and the UK and to promote and protect the interests of Japanese business in the UK. Present membership is over 300 companies and organisations.

The Council of the Chamber consists of 33 members, one of whom is the President, and five of whom are the Vice-Presidents. The Honorary Secretary is appointed from the staff of the President's company and acts as liaison between the President and the Secretariat. The JCCI Secretariat consists of a Japanese Secretary General, one British and two Japanese officers.

MEMBERSHIP: The criteria for membership are as follows. There are two categories of membership, Full and Associate. To qualify for either category, a company or organisation should (a) be recommended for membership by at least one Chamber Council member; and (b) understand and accept that the working language of the Chamber is Japanese (in particular, for meetings concerned with the running of the Chamber such as Council Meetings and the AGM, proceedings and minutes will be in Japanese only, though many other activities and communications will, in practice, also be accessible in English); and (c) be prepared to communicate in Japanese. Introductions will be made to Council members for purposes of (a) above if requested by the applicant company. There is no requirement for Japanese ownership of the company applying. Companies and organisations with employees who are Japanese nationals are eligible for Full Membership (on a scale linked to the numbers of Japanese staff). Those without Japanese staff are eligible for Associate Membership at the flat rate of £500. The final decision on all applications for membership will be at the Council's discretion at one of its quarterly meetings.

ACTIVITIES: Services to Members:
The Chamber arranges seminars and similar events with subjects of interest to members. It holds a major annual reception to celebrate the New Year. The Chamber and the Japan Society jointly arrange: four lunches a year, to which a prominent speaker is invited, and an annual golf match; these functions are open to members of both organisations. The Chamber provides the secretariat for the Palmerston Kai, an organisation which all Chamber members have the right to join. Palmerston Kai holds five lunches a year with guest speakers in Japanese on economic, political and other topics. The Chamber and Japan Airlines organise an annual golf tournament. The Chamber arranges, or takes part in arranging, functions and meetings for important visitors and on other special occasions.

The secretariat sends members a quarterly Japanese-language newsletter, 'Thames', containing information about Chamber activities and other notices, and a quarterly English-language newsletter, JCCI Review, with news on the Chamber, its members and Japanese business generally in the UK. The secretariat also publishes the Directory of Members which is distributed yearly (with quarterly updates) to the members only. Members also receive copies of the minutes of Council meetings quarterly and of the AGM and a quarterly publication in Japanese entitled "British Economic Trends" edited by JETRO and published by this Chamber.

The Chamber represents the views of its members to the relevant authorities as necessary. The secretariat also assists members with enquiries.

Services to non-members:

The Chamber receives enquiries from non-members, which are dealt with, where possible, by the secretariat or referred to other organisations. The English-language newsletter, JCCI Review (see above), is issued quarterly to a selected readership.

Trade and business directories, periodicals, books, reports and papers relating to Japan and the U.K. are kept in the JCCI office. It is not normally possible for enquirers to consult these in person because of limited space.

Contacts with Japanese organisations in the UK:
The Chamber maintains contact as appropriate with the Commercial, Financial, Information and other departments of the Embassy of Japan, and maintains close liaison with other British and Japanese governmental organisations.

Bi-monthly public relations liaison meetings (Kohorenraku Kaigi) are held between the Embassy (Information), JETRO London, Japan National Tourist Organisation, Japan Foundation, Japan Airlines, Nippon Club, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the Chamber.

Contacts with British organisations:
Regular contact is maintained with the Japan Society and with UK Trade and Investment. JCCI is also in touch with the British-Japanese Parliamentary Group, the Confederation of British Industry and other British organisations from time to time as necessary. JCCI has contact with various British regional and local development organisations.

Contact with international organisations in the UK:

The Chamber is a member of the Council of Foreign Chambers of Commerce. The Council exchanges information of mutual interest and it arranges and participates in various events.

Contacts overseas:

Various Ministries of the Japanese Government, and certain other organisations in Japan including the Nippon Keidanren (Japan Business Federation) and its public relations subsidiary, the Keizai Koho Centre (KKC), the Japan Chamber of Commerce & Industry (the umbrella organisation for chambers in Japan) and regional chambers in Japan make direct contact with the Chamber from time to time.
The Chamber's secretariat takes part in an annual meeting of Secretaries of Japanese Chambers in Europe. The Chamber's newsletters and its Directory of Members are distributed to these Chambers as well as to five major Chambers in Japan. The Chamber receives newsletters and directories of members of those Japanese Chambers in Europe in exchange.
OPENING HOURS: Mon — Fri, 9.30am — 5.30pm (Lunch Break 12.30—1.30pm )
